City of Blinding Lights

Welcome to Fifth Grade!

I can't wait for Meet and Greet on Friday from 3 - 4.

It's been a marvelous summer!  I had a great time soaking up the sun at the pool, working on getting stronger, and attending concerts.  I went to see my favorite band U2 in Chicago.  This was an awesome experience, and I was reminded how important it is for us to become global citizens.
I was inspired by the show to start thinking about my role in the world when this image was projected on a giant screen.
Students - I can't wait to hear about your summer vacations.  As you are getting ready for school to begin, I would like you to think about who you are as a reader.  During the first two weeks of school, we will discuss our reading life.  I am asking you to collect items in a shoebox that show your reading life.  You could include things like where you like to read or your favorite book.  I will share more with you about this activity during the first two days of school.

Parents - Please follow my blog.  I will also send out a weekly email on Thursday titled Hello from Room 181!  If you have any questions or concerns, please ask!

Simply Amazing!

Thank you to all the students today for their hard work leading up to the F.AVE Finale!  All of the students did an amazing job with their presentations, and I've heard nothing but wonderful things from other teachers.

The end is very close for us!  This time of year is bittersweet.  I'm super excited for the students to move on to middle school and I know they will all have many successes in the future, but I'm very sad to know that I won't be seeing them each day.  I've had a great year with working with this group of students.  I was even brought to tears this morning during the Finale after watching and hearing all the great things the students remember about this year.

Remember we still have two more days of school.  Tomorrow is an important day because we will be reflecting on Exhibition and the last 7 weeks.  We will also have our birthday celebration.

If you have any pictures or videos of your students, please share!  I would love to see it.

Tomorrow is Wacky Tacky Day!

Have a great night!

Georgia Milestone Practice (GMAS)

ELA Practice

Students needs to write more than 1 sentence in response to these prompts.  These are intended to be answered with a paragraph/essay.  They need to use the text to support their answers.

One way for students to show that they are directly quoting, paraphrasing, or providing evidence is by using sentence stems.

Some examples of these stems are:
In the text the author states______________
The story stated ___________________
I know this because___________________
For example__________________
The author says______________
In paragraph # _____, it says
The graphic showed ____________

Check out the blog tomorrow for some more tips and some more practice!  If you you want some feedback about your responses, send me your answers on Edmodo.

Also, don't forget that you can practice your grammar skills on IXL.com and that you can practice summarizing non-fiction on newsela.com.

Have a great day!
